Description
Beginning in August 1935, Missouri issued tokens in 1-mill and 5-mill values in order to collect the sales tax. They were originally made of thin cardboard and called "milk-cap tokens" because they looked like the cardboard caps that were used for glass milk bottles. Then Missouri tried metal tokens, which were slightly larger than a nickel, but thinner. They were lightweight, dull, and ugly and would never be mistaken for a coin. The 5-mill token had a hole in the center.
This is a sales tax token from the State of Missouri. Back during a time when one US cent was actually worth something, various states issued sales tax tokens to account for fractions of a cent when computing tax. The tax tokens from Missouri are from the Depression era. They were used when the sales tax on an item was less than a cent.
Since there were no fractional cents to give change, the final price of an item was rounded up and the difference paid back to the customer in sales tax tokens. These tokens could be used to pay all or part of any sales tax at the time of another purchase.
The Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut produced this sales tax token around 1935. The Scovill Company was established in 1802 as a button manufacturer and is still in business today. Scovill was an early industrial American innovator, adapting armory manufacturing processes to mass-produce a variety of consumer goods including buttons, daguerreotype mats, medals, coins, and tokens.
