    Description

Lot of 27 Depression Era STATE SALES TAX REVENUE Tokens
Up for sale is a lot of 27 vintage Sales Tax Revenue tokens, from various states.  These are from the Depression Era in the 1930s, as they belonged to my father who grew up in the time.
Sales tax tokens were fractional cent devices used to pay sales tax on very small purchases in many American states during the years of the Great Depression. Tax tokens were created as a means for consumers to avoid being "overcharged" by having to pay a full penny tax on purchases of 5 or 10 cents. Issued by private firms, by municipalities, and by twelve state governments, the denominations on the sales tax tokens are numbers of "mills" (tenths of one cent).
The 12 states that issued these sales tax tokens were: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah and Washington.
This lot has coins from 10 of these 12 states.
Most of the tokens are about the size of a nickel (some smaller) and are likely made of light-weight aluminum.  I found photographing them a challenge, as it’s hard to get the right lighting.  Many are still shiny. I hope this comes off in the pictures.  Please see my photos for condition and other details.  If you need any other photos, I am happy to try and get a better shot for you.
Included in this 27 token lot are:
    Alabama [5] – four (1) and one (5)
    Colorado [3] – two (one-fifth cent) and one (2)
    Illinois [1] – one (one & a half cent)
    Kansas [4] – two (1) and two (2)
    Louisiana [5] – five (2)
