Description
Obverse and Reverse are identical:CONSUMER’S TAX CHECK OKLAHOMA 1.
This token is aluminum, 21 mm in diameter, and probably made in the latter part 1930’s.
Sales tax often resulted in the final price of an item(s) having fractions of a cent, so sales tax tokens were made starting in 1935 in order to give change for sales taxes.
The tokens were dominated in fractions of a cent, or “mills” (1 mill = 1/10 of a cent).
People did not like having to carry a second set of coins, and different states issued different tax tokens.
The use of tax tokens declined and was finally discontinued in 1961.
